    At the school where I learned, we actually teach the new student to do a tan then the bong. After the student can reliably find the correct bong without the crutch of tan first, they are instructed to eliminate the superfluous, extra tan. Seems to work fairly well.

    A very common objection I hear, is that the Bong Sao only works for a Wing Chun punch, since a common punch targets the face, which higher than the chest and also higher than the functional range of the bong sao. I do have some ideas of why the bong sao is nevertheless a useful tool since it creates good habits…but I also would be very interested what your point of view is. Thanks

      WC needs to test its techniques against other fighting styles way more often. When i trained WC i suddenly realized 'wait all my techniques only work against another WC guy'. If someone threw a reverse flying head drop kick at me like Joe Rogan I'd be dead

    • @fudochi-dojo1527
      @fudochi-dojo1527 Месяц назад

      @@armitageshanks2499 In my understanding of martial arts, technique only plays a secondary role. A martial art is defined by its strategy and principles. So if the strategy of Wing Chun is to seek close combat, then Bong Sao makes sense, because the Wing Chun Punch is the only reasonable way to strike straight at close range. So if someone wants to land a flying head drop kick, the right distance is needed and that is certainly not the close range from Wing Chun.

    • @file66
      @file66 Месяц назад

      @@fudochi-dojo1527 In the spirit of discourse, my understanding of Bong Sau is that it's a transitional shape - the maxim I hear constantly is: "Bong Sau Never Stays" - no matter if you are using the "Correct Bong" or the "Wrong Bong" the idea is that you will move into another action and attack your target's center (do not chase their hands or you will get hit). Sifu Gary Lam provides some insight into the thinking on his RUclips channel - look for the video "Don't Think! Only Feel!" Thank you Sifu Peterson for your great videos, lectures and books. You continue to help my understanding every day and I appreciate all the time and effort you put in (and the efforts of those that help make these videos happen). Phew sorry for a long comment. Thank you for sharing your experience.

    • @WSLVTMalaysia
      @WSLVTMalaysia Месяц назад

      In an earlier video specifically on the ‘Bong Sau’ concept, this aspect was discussed in some detail. ‘Bong Sau’ is a deflection/controlling/jamming tool for specific conditions, and it is NOT the only “tool in the box” as so many seem to think, and definitely NOT an action designed to deal with head and/or body shots for other than certain forms of attack. A well-trained Ving Tsun practitioner would NOT use ‘Bong Sau’ for every attack aimed at the head; there are several far better actions in our arsenal for such situations, such as ‘Taan Sau’, ‘Cham Kiu Fook Sau’ and others.

    Thankyou very much Sifu David for the detailed explanation. Pardon me if I'm out of topic, for the Wu Sau action, I noticed that the angle of the arm changes when doing the Wu Sau. For the palm, does the direction of the palm change? I've watched another explanation on the Wu Sau action which explained that the palm of the hand needs to face the opponent to make it work. Thankyou very much.

    • @WSLVTMalaysia
      @WSLVTMalaysia Месяц назад

      When doing ‘Wu Sau’ the edge of the hand needs to be facing in the direction of the opponent. Facing the palm towards them/their attacking limb would be a weaker and far less effective shape as the elbow would not offer the same amount of support & movement. In any case, as described previously in this series, it is the forearm, not the hand, that is in contact with the attacking limb, thus leaving the hand free to attack whilst the forearm continues to control & deflect the incoming attack.

    Seeing that wing Chun is a conceptual art, that means this action (pak sao), can be used for many different uses. As an example, a guy punches & you attack simultaneously but you cover that side of your face with the pak sao or even actively push it away. Would that not be a correct interpretation?

    • @WSLVTMalaysia
      @WSLVTMalaysia Месяц назад

      Using the ‘Paak Sau’ action in that manner is, of course, a possibility, but it is a very high risk move that is not guaranteed to prevent you from taking a hit. Deflecting the attacking hand of your opponent further forward of your own body, with a ‘Jut Sau’ or ‘Wu Sau’ or perhaps a ‘Taan Sau’ action would have a higher success potential. However, it all depends on the situation & the circumstances, so as the late Wong Shun Leung would say, “If it works, it’s Ving Tsun!”😉👍
